My Mower Leaves Deep Wheel Tracks During Mowing, What Can I Do To Mitigate The Impact?

If your lawn mower’s wheels are leaving deep tracks on the grass, here are some simple fixes to try:

  1. Mow when the grass is dry: Wet grass and damp soil make it easier for the mower to sink in, resulting in deeper wheel marks. Avoid mowing during or right after rain — wait until the grass and ground are dry.
  2. Change your mowing pattern regularly: Mowing in the same direction every time can gradually compact the soil and flatten the grass in those paths. Try alternating between horizontal, vertical, and diagonal patterns each time you mow.
  3. Adjust the mowing height: Cutting the grass too short weakens it and makes it more likely to flatten under the mower’s weight — which highlights wheel tracks. Keep your grass at a moderate, healthy height, depending on the grass type.
  4. Check and clean the wheels: Built-up grass clippings, mud, or debris on the wheels can reduce traction and cause them to dig in more. Wipe down the wheels before each use to keep them clean and rotating smoothly.
